William Attenborough Kirkland was born on March 12, 1869 in Guelph, Ontario to John Kirkland and Letitia Clarke. He married Edna May Cosman on November 17, 1891. Edna was born on June 19, 1874 in St. John, New Brunswick to William Cosman and Emily White. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters - Leila May (1892-1982), Ruby Maude (1893-1989), John William (1894-1973), Leonard Franklin (1896-1979), Myrtle Cosman (1897-1976), and Ernest Herbert (1905-2000). Edna died on May 7, 1942 in Ladner. William died on May 10, 1951 in Vancouver.

In 1910 William and Edna commissioned Ladner architect J.B . Elliot to build them a large Edwardian-style home on the family farm. Construction on what would be named 'Hawthorne Grove' began in that year and was completed in the fall of 1911.

The pioneer Kirkland family was prominent in the political and social life of Delta and resided in the house until 1949.
