William and Isabella Pybus

William Pybus (1852-1926)

William Chadwick Pybus (1852-1926), born in Ontario, and his wife Isabella, nee Buchanan, (1858-1943) were early Delta pioneers. At the time of his death William Pybus had been un Delta for 49 years; he is assumed to have arrived circa 1877. Similarly Isabella was listed as being a resident for 65 years at the time of her death. Among their children, who remained as farmers in Delta, were Walter Chadwick Pybus (1880-1951) and Rock Pybus (1881-1949).

Walter Pybus' farm was located at 5300 34B avenue. He was married in 1909 to his second wife, Christina McNeill, and the house and barn on his property were circa 1910. It is known that the barn was under construction in late October 1910, as reported in the Delta Times on October 22nd 1910. Walter lived there until his death in 1951. He retired from farming in 1950 after 47 years - so it can be assumed that he began his farming career in 1903.

Rock Pybus was born at Ladner's Landing on April 10, 1881. He married Agnes Jane McWaters (died 1970) on November 1, 1905; Rock was 24 and a farmer in Ladner, and "Aggie" was 19 and a native of Glascow, Scotland. They moved into their house at 3028 53rd Street circa 1915-16. Rock practiced mixed farming until just before his death on June 22, 1949 at the age of 68; he was buried in the family plot in Boundary Bay Cemetery. Rock was noted by relatives as being a "gentleman farmer".
